The Gangnam Clinic District, Explained
Four neighbourhoods, ten minutes apart, each with a different reputation. A map for people who have only heard the word “Gangnam.”
People say “I'm going to Gangnam for treatment” the way they might say “I'm going to Manhattan for dinner.” Gangnam-gu is a district of over half a million people, and the clinics inside it are not evenly distributed or interchangeable. They cluster in four places, and the clusters have characters.
강남역 · Gangnam Station
The densest concentration, and the most straightforward to reach. Lines 2 and Sinbundang meet here, the exits open onto Gangnam-daero, and clinic signage runs up the sides of buildings for several blocks in every direction.
This is the volume end of the market: high throughput, competitive pricing, lots of evening and Saturday availability. It is also the easiest area for a first visit, because everything is walkable from one station and the buildings are numbered along a single main road.
Airport transfer is simple — roughly 70 to 90 minutes from Incheon by limousine bus or by AREX plus one subway change.
신사 · Sinsa and Garosu-gil
A short ride north. Garosu-gil is a tree-lined shopping street, and the clinics around it tend to be smaller and more design-conscious, often built around one physician rather than a rotating team.
Prices sit somewhat higher than Gangnam Station for comparable work. If you want a quieter room and a longer consultation, this is where to look.
압구정 로데오 · Apgujeong Rodeo
The old-money end. Apgujeong has been the centre of Korean cosmetic medicine the longest, and the surgical clinics — facelift, rhinoplasty, eye surgery — are concentrated here alongside dermatology.
If your interest is non-surgical skin treatment, you are not obliged to come here, and you will generally pay for the postcode. If you are combining consultations for surgery and skin, the proximity is useful.
청담 · Cheongdam
Adjacent to Apgujeong and quieter still. Flagship boutiques, entertainment agencies, and a set of clinics that market themselves on discretion. Appointment-only is common; walk-ins are not the model.
Getting between them
All four sit within about a 15-minute taxi ride of each other, and taxis in Seoul are inexpensive by the standards of most visitors. Subway is reliable but involves a change between Line 2 and Line 3 for the northern neighbourhoods.
What this means for a short trip
If you have one day, stay at Gangnam Station. The density means that if a consultation does not go the way you hoped, the next option is a five-minute walk rather than a taxi ride, and the station itself is the fastest point back to the airport.
If you have several days and are comparing clinics seriously, book consultations in two different neighbourhoods on the same afternoon. The contrast in how they talk to you is informative in a way that reading reviews is not.
